Pet Portrait Styles: 8 Embroidered Looks and the Photo Each One Needs

Light blue embroidered cat hoodie with a line art tabby cat face on the left chest and the name Lucy with a heart on the sleeve, next to the cat's photo

Pet portrait styles are the different ways a pet can be pictured, from a full-color likeness to a simple outline. In embroidery, eight styles work well: a full-color portrait, a pet face with a varsity name, single-thread line art, several faces in a row, a holiday portrait, a memorial portrait in a flower wreath, a breed face chosen from a chart and a ready-made illustrated design. Each one needs a different photo and suits a different spot on the garment.

Below we compare the styles, describe each with an example and explain how thread changes a portrait. Every style is stitched to order, and the portraits made from your photo are gathered in our custom pet embroidery range.

Which pet portrait styles work in embroidery?

Eight pet portrait styles work in embroidery, because each one can be built from thread at the size of a chest design. The table compares them:

Full-color portrait from a photo

A full-color portrait stitches your pet’s face with its own coat colors, markings and eye color, so it reads as that one animal rather than a breed. One design can hold up to four pets side by side, each with an optional name. Our custom pet portrait sweatshirt from a photo is the example.

Pet face with a varsity name

This style pairs a full-color face with the pet’s name arched above it in capital varsity letters, plus an optional “EST.” and year on either side. It shows one pet across the center chest and works for cats as well as dogs, as on our custom dog crewneck with a varsity name.

Single-thread line art

A line art pet portrait traces the face, ears, eyes and main markings as an outline and stitches it in one thread color. It suits a small left-chest design, and a thread a few shades darker than the fabric gives a soft tone-on-tone look. See our embroidered line art cat hoodie, which works for dogs too.

Several pet faces in a row

Two to four faces sit side by side on the middle chest, each stitched from its own photo, with names or a short line such as “Murph and Floof” underneath. Cats and dogs can share one design. Our embroidered cat sweatshirt with names shows the style.

Holiday portrait

A holiday portrait gives each pet’s face a Santa hat, reindeer antlers, a snowman top hat or a beanie and scarf, with an optional name stitched below. Each pet on the design can wear a different style, as on our custom dog Christmas sweatshirt.

Memorial portrait in a flower wreath

The pet’s face is framed by two sprays of flowers or leaves, such as white daisies, wildflowers or an olive branch, with the name in soft script between them. Owners often choose it to remember a pet who has died, though it suits a living pet too. Our dog memorial sweatshirt with a wreath is the example.

Breed face chosen from a chart

Instead of sending a photo, you pick each dog’s face by number from a chart of embroidered breeds and add a name below it. A dog whose breed is not on the chart can still be drawn from a photo you upload. See our dog breed sweatshirt.

Ready-made illustrated designs

Ready-made designs are drawn in advance, from a small dog face on the left chest to a full scene across the chest, so they need no photo at all. Browse them in dog sweatshirts for humans.

Which photo does each pet portrait style need?

Every photo-based style needs a sharp, well-lit photo in which the pet looks toward the camera with both eyes visible and nothing covers its face. Full-color and varsity portraits use the photo for fur colors and markings; line art uses it mainly for the outline of the face and its markings. Our guide to choosing the best photo for embroidery covers light, angle and crop. The breed chart and ready-made designs need no photo.

How is an embroidered portrait different from a painted one?

An embroidered portrait is built from thread stitches, while a painted or printed portrait lays down color, so embroidery turns a photo into stitched shapes and a set of thread colors. Wikipedia’s article on machine embroidery describes the three main stitch types:

  • Running stitch: a simple line, used for outlines and travel paths.
  • Satin stitch: used for narrow, dense details and lettering.
  • Tatami or fill stitch: used to cover larger areas.

A line art portrait leans on outlines, a varsity name on dense lettering and a full-color face on filled areas of thread, so very fine details may be simplified. A watercolor or oil painting can blend colors smoothly; thread gives a raised texture you can feel. Our guide to embroidered versus printed pet portraits compares the two methods in more depth.

How do you choose a pet portrait style?

To choose a pet portrait style, start with who will wear it, how bold it should look and which photos you have:

  • A subtle everyday piece: line art or a single face on the left chest. Our pet portrait placement guide compares left, center and right chest.
  • A strong likeness: a full-color portrait on the center chest.
  • Two to four pets: faces in a row, a full-color portrait or a holiday portrait.
  • A name as the focus: the varsity style; our list of pet portrait personalization options covers names, fonts and thread colors.
  • A memorial: the flower wreath portrait, often with the pet’s name.
  • No usable photo: the breed chart or a ready-made design.

Each personalized style comes on more than one garment; our guide to choosing a sweatshirt, hoodie or T-shirt helps you pick one. Personalized styles come with a free design proof and unlimited edits before we stitch.

Frequently asked questions

What are the four types of portraits?

In portrait photography, the four classic approaches are constructionist, environmental, candid and creative, as SLR Lounge’s portrait photography page lists them. Pet portraits sold as art are grouped by medium and style instead, such as painted, digital and embroidered.

What is the average cost of a pet portrait?

The cost of a pet portrait depends on its style, medium, size and number of pets; one line art face takes less stitching than four full-color faces. Each product page above shows the price for the options you choose.

What is a line art pet portrait?

A line art pet portrait shows a pet as an outline of its face and main markings in one color, without filled areas. In thread, it is stitched in a single color, which keeps it quiet on the garment.

Can one portrait include more than one pet?

Yes. The full-color, faces-in-a-row, holiday and breed chart styles hold up to four pets; the varsity, line art and memorial wreath styles show one pet each.
